In truth, I use somewhat softer language now. But I still maintain that drug courts (which direct offenders who committed crimes, such a theft, out of need to maintain a habit into drug treatment). Folks can refuse treatment and go to jail for committing a crime. I don't subscribe to the brain disease model. If I did, I would not hold them accountable. I would regard them as victims of their neural circuitry. In a criminal justice setting, addiction is a behavior. And behavior can be shaped, with the goal of personal flourishing, by sanctions and incentives.
